Day five at the Sport Chek National Club Championships U-16 Girls Cup was semi-final day. Two semi-finals were played under difficult conditions at Mount Pearl. With rain pouring down and temperatures feeling like four degrees Celsius it was a huge change from yesterday’s warm clear day.
The first semi-final to hit the pitch was Nova Scotia’s Halifax County United and Manitoba’s FC Northwest.
Both teams shared chances in the first half, with Manitoba winning the possession game.
The second half was the reverse with United winning the possession game.
After two 40 minute halves, kicks from the penalty mark would be required to determine who would be playing for the Championship.
Kezia Gesell, FC Northwest’s goalkeeper, who subbed in at the half, would set the bar high, stopping the first United attempt. Gesell would go on to stop United’s fourth attempt, while her teammates hit three of four securing the victory for FC Northwest and moving them into the Gold Medal Game.
The second semi-final would feature Ontario’s Darlington Fusion against Alberta’s Calgary Southwest United Premiers.
Fusion would be the first on the board with a successful penalty taken by Emily Armstrong.
But the Premiers wouldn’t be knocked down as they would storm down the field only minutes later and Poonam Rooprai received a cross, which she chipped just over the Fusion keeper.
The first half would end 1-1.
After the short break, Fusion continued their strong play, attacking Premiers’ back line, but they couldn’t get past Megan Brown, Premiers’ goalkeeper.
As in the first semi, this one would also go to penalty kicks to determine who would advance to the gold medal match.
The ball would look like a giant beach ball to Mackayln Bickle, Fusion’s keeper, who would stop three of four Premier shooters and secure the victory and advancement to the Gold Medal match.
Ontario’s Darlington Fusion will play Manitoba’s FC Northwest in the Gold Medal match tomorrow at 09:00 local / 07:30 ET /04:30 PT at Mount Pearl Middle. While the other semi-finalists, Alberta’s Calgary Southwest United Premiers, will square off against Nova Scotia’s Halifax County United at 11:00 local / 09:30 ET / 06:30 PT at Topsail Field in Conception Bay South.
