Edmonton Strikers: Claudia Nikel 16’
FC Northwest: Brianna Krieger 57’
The Edmonton Strikers of Alberta booked a spot in tomorrow’s gold medal match thanks to a 1:1 draw with FC Northwest of Manitoba under grey skies and light rain in the final game of Group B play.
Requiring only a draw to advance to the final, the Strikers took a conservative approach to the game, keeping their defensive lines compact and suffocating any attack that FC Northwest could generate in the opening half.
Striker Claudia Nikel would put the Alberta side ahead in the 16th minute as she got on the end of a throw-in, from the right side, and ploughed her way through the FC Northwest defence, before calmly slotting the ball in the net to the short side.
The game would remain 1-0 for the Striker’s at the half.
Knowing that they needed to fill the net to provide their side with any chance of making it to tomorrow’s final, FC Northwest came out in the second half with renewed vigour as substitute Rianna Grinham’s left footed shot from 20 yards out hit the crossbar in the opening 10 minutes.
FC Northwest would find the equalizer in the 57th minute as Brianna Krieger finished off a through-ball and lobbed the keeper, who rushed off her line in an attempt the snub out the attack.
After finding an equalizer, FC Northwest would continue to pressure the Striker’s backline but were unable to find the quality required, in the final third of the field, to unlock a Striker’s defence that conceded only one goal all tournament.
As the winners of Group B with three wins and one tie, the Strikers who scored 11 goals for and conceded one will advance to the gold medal match against the North Mississauga Panther’s of Ontario who have maintained a perfect 4-0 record, scoring 16 goals for and conceding 2. Kick-off for tomorrow’s game is set for 12.00 PT / 15.00 ET.
