(ISN) – With an 8-0 win over the visiting University of Winnipeg Wesmen, the No. 5 ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies secured a home playoff date in the Canada West men’s soccer quarter-finals.
Saskatchewan remains undefeated to sit in first place in the Canada West Prairie Division with an 8-0-1 record. Winnipeg drops to 2-6-1. The top team teams in each division host a quarter-final match.
The high-powered Saskatchewan offence didn’t waste anytime opening the scoring
with a Luigi Bekwayo goal in the first minute. Garrett Peters beat the Winnipeg netminder with a ball that looped just by and landed on Bekwayo’s foot.
Peters added a goal of his own in the 23rd minute.
Brett Levis added the third and fourth goals of the half. His first was a long shot that bent, hit the post and went in at the 43rd minute. He also scored on a penalty kick in extra time of the first half.
The offence continued in the second half. David Brown scored his eighth goal of the season on a penalty kick in the 58th minute. It was Brown’s fifth successful penalty kick on the season.
Rookie Tyler Redl rounded out the scoring for Saskatchewan with goals in the 64th, 81st and 87th minutes.
Joshua Partaker made seven saves for the Wesmen in the loss, while Michal Bandula made two for the Huskies.
The two teams will meet again Sunday. Kick off is set for 2:15 p.m. on Field 7 in PotashCorp Park.
