Goals: Alexandra Caputo 49’
The final day of the Sport Chek National Club Championships U-16 Girls Cup competition begun early, on a clear, cool, windy day in Mount Pearl, Newfoundland and Labrador.
The championship game featured an undefeated Darlington Fusion from Ontario, squaring off against FC Northwest, a Manitoba team who won two of their last three matches in penalty shoot-outs.
Both teams came out playing a very defensive game keeping both back lines deep to minimize the number of attacks.
Madison Fordyce, the FC Northwest keeper, who stole the show in their previous matches by stopping a number of penalty kicks took a hard knock and had to be subbed off in the 36th minute. The FC Northwest team would have to adjust their strategy if they were planning on going to kicks again.
As both teams exchanged play in the middle of the pitch for the majority of the fist half, it would end 0-0.
FC Northwest came out strong in the second half, looking for that go ahead goal. In the 49th minute recent substitute Kelsey Chmelnytzki hit a perfect header that just grazed the far post. Darlington Fusion stormed off the field immediately after that near goal and won a corner. The corner was taken by Alexandra Caputo who would use the strong crosswind to her advantage and drill a ball that curled right in to the goal, between the keeper and the defender who was on the far post.
Ontario would continue their attack, getting another chance in the 70th minute, when Caputo again took a free-kick from the top of the 18 and curved it around the wall, but this time it was Kezia Gesell, FC Northwest keeper who made an unbelievable diving save, keeping her team in the match.
Unfortunately, time was not on FC Northwest’s side and seemed to run too quickly. The Darlington Fusion would go on to win 1:0 in 80 minutes and take Ontario’s fourth straight, Sport Chek National Club Championships U-16 Girls Cup.
