Day Two: 2014 CCAA PING Golf National Championships

The second round of the 2014-15 PING CCAA Golf Championship was played this Thursday at the Lorette Golf club, Quebec City. Chair of the Championship, Christian Brosseau commented on the tournament so far saying “The second day proved to be more of a struggle for the players. The wind made things tougher for all players.

That has only made things more interesting as the competition is getting closer on the men’s and women’s side.”

In the women’s team competition, the St. Lawrence Lady Lions (RSEQ) are still in first place. They hold a 9 stroke lead over the Fraser Valley Lady Cascades (PACWEST). The UBC-Okanagan Heat (PACWEST) comes in third two strokes behind Fraser Valley.

On the men’s side, there are a few changes at the top of the standings from the first round. Holland Hurricanes (ACAA) shot a tournament-best 286 team score to leapfrog both leaders after day 1 and take over top spot by 3 strokes. The Camosun Chargers (PACWEST) come in second place followed by Fraser Valley Cascades (PACWEST), who sit 3 shots behind the Chargers. Two Quebec teams come in fourth and fifth. Hosts, St. Lawrence Lions, are fourth 1 shot off the podium, while the Andre-Laurendeau Boomerangs are fifth, 4 strokes behind the Lions.

On the individual side, Jarred Callbeck, from Camosun, took sole possession of first place shooting a 2-under par 70. He has a 1 stroke lead over Hugo Bernard from Andre-Laurendeau who shot the best round today with a 68. Adam Poulin, from St. Lawrence comes in third, one shot behind Bernard. Three golfers are tied for fourth, one shot off the podium, Etienne Papineau, Poulin’s teammate on the Lions team, Erick Locke from Holland and Grant Maskiewich from Camosun.

On the women side, Lorelle Weavers from Niagara College (OCAA) is leading the way. She shot her second consecutive 77 to hold a two stroke lead over Noemie Ouellette of the St. Lawrence Lions. Two golfers come in tied for third place four strokes behind the leader, Oceane Jacques, also from St. Lawrence, and Carolyn Lee from UBC-Okanagan.

The final round will take place Friday at the Lorette Golf Club. Leaders are set to tee off around 10am on the women’s side, while the men are set to start around 10:30.
