TEAM WHL 2014 SUBWAY® SUPER SERIES ROSTER ANNOUNCED
(ISN) – Calgary, AB – The Western Hockey League, in collaboration with the Canadian Hockey League, the Saskatoon Blades and the Brandon Wheat Kings today announced the roster of Team WHL which will compete against Team Russia in the 2014 SUBWAY® Super Series.
Team WHL will face Team Russia in Game 1 of the 2014 SUBWAY® Super Series in Saskatoon, SK on Monday, November 10th, and will continue the series on Tuesday, November 11th with Game 2 in Brandon, MB. The OHL will host Games 3 and 4 while the QMJHL will conclude the series as hosts for Games 5 and 6.
Team WHL’s roster will boast a number of NHL prospects including 2014 NHL Draft first round selections Jake Virtanen (Vancouver Canucks – #6 overall), Haydn Fleury (Carolina Hurricanes – #7 overall), Travis Sanheim (Philadelphia Flyers, #17 overall), Conner Bleackley (Colorado Avalanche, #23 overall) and John Quenneville (New Jersey Devils, #30 overall).
This year’s edition of Team WHL will also feature a host of talent either hailing from or currently playing in both Saskatchewan and Manitoba. On November 10th in Saskatoon, Carlyle, SK native Haydn Fleury will suit up for Team WHL alongside fellow blueliners Dillon Heatherington (Swift Current) and Josh Morrissey (Prince Albert) as well as forwards Brayden Point (Moose Jaw) and Morgan Klimchuck (Regina). The following night in Brandon, the Wheat Kings will be represented on Team WHL by forwards Jayce Hawryluk and John Quenneville while Winnipeg, MB product Madison Bowey will patrol the back end.
Each of the three CHL member Leagues assembled a selection Committee, working closely with Hockey Canada, to select the players for this year’s series. This year, Team WHL will be coached by 2014 WHL Coach of the Year Dave Lowry (Victoria Royals) who will also serve as an assistant coach for Team Canada at the 2015 IIHF World Junior Championship. Kelly McCrimmon (Brandon Wheat Kings) will be the assistant coach for Team WHL.
