2015 is Year of Sport in Canada

OTTAWA – Swimming Canada applauds the Government of Canada’s announcement that 2015 has been proclaimed the Year of Sport in Canada.

Governor General David Johnston and the Minister of State (Sport) Bal Gosal made the announcement Thursday in a ceremony on Parliament Hill.

The Year of Sport in Canada underscores and celebrates the key role that sport plays in Canada.

It is a proactive pan-Canadian initiative implemented to celebrate sport in Canada and the role it plays in enhancing the lives of Canadians from coast to coast to coast. During the year, sport events and other celebratory activities will highlight how sport benefits Canadians.

Swimming Canada CEO Ahmed El-Awadi attended the announcement.

“Next year will be a big year for swimming, with the Pan Am Games and Parapan Am Games on home soil in Toronto,” El-Awadi said. “We’d like to thank the Government of Canada for drawing attention to the importance of sport in our society. This will make 2015 even more of a celebration of our athletes and the role of sports in our culture.”
