Dufort and Bourque double dip as Redmen hoopsters force OT but X-factor too strong

Box Score

MONTREAL — Senior Vincent Dufort of Smiths Falls, Ont., was two assists shy of a triple double but it was not enough as the McGill Redmen fell in overtime to St. Francis Xavier University 77-73 to open the men’s division of the 20th Redbird Classic basketball tournament at Love Competition Hall, Friday.

Dufort led McGill with 20 points and played a game-high 38 minutes. The 22-year-old team captain recorded a “double-double”, grabbing 10 rebounds while also dishing out eight assists. Fellow big man Francois Bourque of Terrebonne, Que., had his own “double-double” scoring 17 points and snagging a game high 11 rebounds.

A slow start plagued the Redmen as they found themselves playing catchup for most of the game. They were outscored 21-13 in the first quarter and were down as much as 17 midway through the second stanza.

“It was disappointing.” said Redmen head coach David DeAverio. “That is two games in a row we came out and started flat. Positive however, is that we battled back but we still need to finish the job.”

McGill used a strong fourth quarter, outscoring the X-Men 18-7 to force overtime, where STFX had a 12-8 advantage on the scoreboard. Bourque, a 6-foot-5 sophomore forward, found himself at the foul-line with four seconds left in regulation with a chance to take the lead but he managed to only knock down one of his two free throws. In the extra period the Redmen were within one possession with a minute left but were unable get it done.

“There is a lot of learning and teaching going on right now,” mentioned DeAverio. “We are playing a lot of young kids in crucial minutes who haven’t experienced this before. It’s valuable for them as we prepare for league play.”

DeAverio’s team also had a rough night shooting, hitting only 33 per cent of their field-goals and connecting on six of their 19 attempts from downtown. A gritty defensive effort made up for their shooting woes as the Redmen had 11 steals and forced 21 turnovers by the X-Men.

St. FX’s top scorer was Kevin Bercy who finished with 20 points, shooting 7-for-13 from the field and 6-for-9 from the charity stripe.
