KELOWNA, British Columbia – The No. 3 Trinity Western men’s volleyball team dropped the first set of Saturday’s match, but came storming back to win the next three as the Spartans earned a 3-1 (22-25, 25-18, 25-20, 25-22) win over UBC Okanagan.
With the win, TWU improves to 4-0 on the season and completes a weekend sweep of UBCO. The loss drops the Heat to 0-4.
After losing the first set, the Spartans took a 7-1 lead early in the second set and seized the match’s momentum. From there, the Spartans largely maintained their edge as they cruised to three straight wins.
“We started a little slow and we saw a similar problem that we’ve seen in the past where when we make one error, we start to compound them with others,” said Spartans coach Ben Josephson. “That put us under a little bit of pressure, but we came out great in the second set and that was the response we wanted to see.
“In the third set, we continued to roll and by the end of the third set I thought we found a really nice rhythm. I thought our opponent played way better tonight, so that challenged us to raise our level and find new solutions.”
The Spartans hit .366 as a team and had eight blocks while UBCO hit just .215 with five blocks.
TWU was led by Ryan Sclater (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) and Blake Scheerhoorn (Belleville, Ont.) who each had 17 kills. Scheerhoorn was particularly sharp as he had just one attacking error all night and also added four blocks. Daniel Grant (Chetwynd, B.C.) led TWU with five blocks to go with 10 kills. Setter Adam Schriemer (Winnipeg) had 40 assists while libero Tyler Koslowsky had a team had a match-high 16 digs.
Jim Bell had a team-high 16 kills for UBCO while Lars Bornemann added 13 kills. Jeremy Fostvelt had a team-high 14 digs.
The Spartans had a 19-15 lead in the first set, but UBCO rallied to tie the game 20-20 and then went on to win 25-22. The Heat had just one attack error over the course of the entire set.
In the second set, TWU went up 7-1 and never looked back, cruising to a seven-point win.
The Spartans took a 9-6 lead in the third set and never trailed the rest of the way. A kill by Sclater finished the set with TWU up 25-20.
In the fourth set, it was close early on, but after a 10-10 tie, TWU scored four straight points and took control of the set. UBCO got within two points late, but was never able to get any closer before TWU’s Ben Lieuwen (Abbotsford, B.C.) tallied the match-winning kill.
The Spartans are back on the road next weekend when they travel to Edmonton to play Alberta Friday and Saturday nights in a battle between the conference’s only two unbeaten teams.
