PACWEST VOLLEYBALL ACTION at the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence

Camosun College Chargers host the Vancouver Island University Mariners

(ISN) – The Camosun College Chargers welcomed a full house of spectators to the Pacifiic Institute for Sport Excellence this evening as the Victoria squads kicked off the 2014-15 PACWEST season with a fierce match up against Island rivals, the VIU Mariners.

In women’s action, the Chargers opened the season with a history making win over the Mariners. Camosun not only defeated VIU in tonight’s match, but they swept the Mariners who had remained undefeated by the Chargers since the program’s inception … over 20 years ago! Camosun secured the record-breaking win 25-27, 25-23, 25-22.

Helping break the Mariner’s streak was second-year outside hitter, Erika Morris (Prince George) who posted 15 points (11 kills, 2 blocks and 2 aces). Fourth-year middle Morgan Marshall (Smithers) made 3 kills, 5 blocks and 1 ace to score 9.

Despite every point being a virtual battle, it was a reversal of fortune for the Chargers men who were defeated by the Mariners in three straight (25-22, 26-24, 25-19). Leading the Chargers in kills was second-year leftside Cam Fennema (Pacific Christian); newcomer Doug Waterman had 3 blocks.

The Island Rivalry continues tomorrow in Nanaimo as the Chargers and Mariners face off at the VIU campus gym. Women 6pm; Men 8pm.
