MONTREAL — Sophomore Carolann Cloutier of Montreal, scored a game-high 16 points and Mariam Sylla added yet another “double-double”, as the McGill women’s basketball team routed Regina  73-41 at the Redbird Classic tournament in Love Competition Hall, Saturday.

Cloutier was lights out from the field, going 6-for-7, including a perfect 4-for-4 performance from downtown. “She shot the ball well and looked to attack,” said Martlet head coach Ryan Thorne. “That’s the type of player I remember from coaching her with Team Quebec and the type of player we hope she will grow into here.”

Sylla, a junior forward from Guinea who has developed a reputation as a “double-double” machine, scoring 11 points and collected 10 rebounds. She struggled from the field going 1-for-10 but made up for it with a stellar 9-for-10 effort from the foul line.

Teammate Stephanie Blais, a fourth-year NCAA transfer from Wagner College, also had a hot hand from long range. She was 4-for-5 from beyond the arc, draining three in a row early in the second quarter. Blias also added two buckets from the foul line.

The Martlets got off to a fast start and found themselves leading 13-6 after the opening quarter. A strong shooting performance in the second frame padded the lead giving McGill a 35-18 margin at halftime. They never looked back from there, dominating the third stanza and taking a 55-26 lead into the final quarter where they ultimately cruised to victory.

McGill was extremely impressive on the defensive end holding Regina to 25 per cent shooting from the floor and 2-for-14 from 3-point range. The Martlets also managed to force 29 turnovers 13 of which were steals. “Our emphasis was on defending the post,” said McGill head coach Ryan Thorne. “We did a good job with the high-low game and our ‘bigs’ made sure the passes weren’t easy.”

Top scorer for the Cougars was Alyssia Kajati with 14 points. She also added nine rebounds.
