MONTREAL — Jenning Leung, a sophomore guard from the Philippines, came off the bench to score a game-high 17 points as McGill overcame a 17-point deficit for the second straight night to upend the Brock University Badgers 76-68 at the Redbird Classic basketball tournament in Love Competition Hall, Saturday.

Leung made 5-of-7 shots from the field including two three pointers. Leung was also solid from the line knocking down 5-of-6 attempts.

McGill, which trailed for most of the game, were outscored 28-14 in the first quarter before amping up the defensive pressure to cut the lead to 34-25 at half.

“We went to the press then dropped back to 2-3 zone and it changed the flow of the game,” said Redmen head coach David DeAverio. “It gave us some energy and allowed us to scratch and claw our way back into the game.”

DeAverio’s squad carried the momentum into the second half, outscoring the Badgers 28-20 in the third quarter to find themselves down one heading into the final frame. Unlike the previous night’s result, a 77-73 loss to St.FX in overtime, the Redmen were able to get the job down and complete the comeback.

Sophomore Michael Peterkin starred as well, scoring 16 points. He connected on 4-of-7 attempts from downtown, including a clutch shot with under three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. He also had four rebounds, a pair of steals and one block.

The Redmen shot 42 per cent from floor and 36 per cent from beyond the arc. They held the Badgers in check for most of the game keeping them to 33 per cent from the field and 31 per cent from downtown.

Brock’s top scorer was Yusuf Ali who finished with 16 points in a game-high 38 minutes of court time.
