STE. ANNE DE BELLEVUE, Que — Thomas Stokes scored a game-high eight points and five different players had tries for the McGill men’s rugby team en route to a 33-15 win over the cellar-dwelling Montreal Carabins at McEwen Field on the University’s Macdonald campus, Saturday.

With a half-dozen starters out, the injury-riddled Redmen have had to work hard to earn their wins this fall, so the victory was sweet. It marked the second time this season that the Redmen had earned a bonus point in the standings, which is awarded, as per International Rugby Board rules, to teams garnering four tries or more in a game, McGill improved to 3-1-2 and now sits atop the RSEQ conference standings with 19 points, two points ahead of second-place Bishop’s (3-1-1) and three ahead of Concordia (3-1-1), each of whom hold a game in hand.

“It took us a while to get going, but when we finally got up to the speed that we are capable of playing, we started to change the tempo and were able to get our points in the second half, ” said head coach Eric Van Sickle.

Stokes, a fourth-year fullback from Vancouver, converted four of the teams five tries, upping his season pints total to 41 in six contests, which ranks second in the RSEQ scoring race, six in arrears of Concordia’s Joseph Fulginiti.

The McGill tries were sprinkled liberally across the roster. Try scorers for McGill were Mitchell Cuillerier, Estello Nap-Hill, James Wilson, Quentin Pradere and Emeric Durand de Bousingen. .

Scoring majors for the Carabins were Tanguy Dargent and Édouard Giroux, Rounding out the scoring was Pierre Constantin, who had one penalty kick and went 1-for-2 on his conversion attempts.

McGill’s Calvin Simpson and Matthieu Brunelvier of the Carabins were named as the players of the game.

With just two more games left in the regular season schedule, McGill will host Sherbrooke on Oct. 29 and travel to Bishop’s on Nov. 7.
