(ISN) – VICTORIA, B.C. – The University of Victoria Vikes men’s and women’s rowing teams are currently on route to Calgary, Alta. for the 2014 The Western Canada University Rowing Championship (CURC) Regatta, hosted by the Alberta Rowing Association on Oct. 18.
The men’s roster includes key returnee Alex Walker, who is coming off of an impressive summer season training with the senior national team in London, Ont. and competing internationally at two Senior World Cups and Senior World Rowing Championships. Also competing for the Vikes is Coxswain Jacob Koudys, who competed at the U-23 2014 World Championships and Lee Hall, who took home multiple golds at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Regatta.
The Vikes women will be looking to reclaim their title in the women’s eight with the return of last year’s champions Becky Wilder, Becca Zimmerman, Christina Scholten, Madeline Spangehi, Jillian Legare, Beth McConnell, Catherine Slamka and Amanda Pomphrey. Head coach Rick Crawley will be looking to use this weekend to shape his crews leading into the national championship, hosted in Victoria, Nov. 1-2.
With both the men and women’s teams finishing second place overall at last year’s Western CURC’s, the Vikes are looking to make waves this weekend when they return to face the western side of the Canada this weekend. Lead by head coach Aalbert Van Schothorst, who took the position in March, has had tremendous impact on the Vikes continued success by filling the shoes of Howard Campbell. This weekend will be a great opportunity for the teams to assert themselves leading into Head and Tail of the Gorge regattas, held at the Gorge Waterway, Oct. 25-26, in Victoria, and the Canadian University Rowing Championships, which will also hosted in Victoria, Nov. 1-2, at Elk Lake.
