(ISN) – PARKSVILLE, B.C. – If the Victoria Cougars were looking for a bounce back game, they got it.

Michael Fretz, Sam McMullen, and Kyle Truax scored in a three minute and 14-second span midway through the third period to lift Victoria to a 5-2 win over the Oceanside Generals on Saturday night.

The Cougars were coming off a 3-1 loss to the Westshore Wolves.

Marino Somerville and Howard Howden also scored while Anthony Ciurro made 20 saves as Victoria moved to within two points of the Wolves for first place in the South Island Division.

However, the Cougars (10-2-1-0) have three games in hand on Westshore.

Somerville opened the scoring at 12:30 of the first period after wiring a wrist shot past Joakim Jutras from the high slot.

Oceanside (2-12-1-0) tied the game with 23.7 seconds remaining in the period. On a shorthanded odd man rush, Jonah Pearson centered the puck over to Chase Gaudreault who tipped it home for his third goal of the season.

Howden would double the lead with the only goal of the second period. At 5:39, Howden snapped the puck off the crossbar and in.

Pearson, who was named the game’s third star, was awarded a penalty shot after getting hauled down three minutes later. A left handed shooter, Pearson went for the deke only to have Ciurro keep the puck out of the net with his right pad.

There was no scoring until the 11:12 mark of the third period when a harmless backhander from Fretz seemed to fool Jutras. Assisting on the play was Robert Zadra who extended his point streak to 12 games.

Victoria blew the game wide open on a power play goal from McMullen at 13:59 and an even strength goal form Truax at 14:26. For Truax, it was his first goal of the season.

Kyle Wade closed out the scoring at 15:13.

The Cougars, who peppered Jutras with 40 shots, went 1-for-8 with the man advantage.

Oceanside went 0-for 6.
