HUSKIES CLINCH HOME PLAYOFF DATE
(ISN) – Canada West leading scorer Jenelle Zapski tallied a hat trick to lead the University of Saskatchewan Huskies to a 3-1 win over the visiting University of Regina Cougars Sunday afternoon on Field 7 in PotashCorp Park.
Saskatchewan closes the Canada West women’s soccer season with a 7-2-3 record and will host the MacEwan University Griffins in a Canada West Quarter-final next weekend.
It is the first home playoff date for the Huskies since 1999 when the Canada West Final Four was hosted on a rotational basis. It is the third straight season the Huskies have made a postseason appearance.
Regina ends the season at 5-5-2.
Zapski, who set a program-record with 14 goals in a single season, set the tone early for Saskatchewan finishing a corner kick that bounced around in the box in the first minute. She added her other goals in the 23rd and 40th minutes.
After Zapski had made the match 2-0, Regina found their legs with a Brianna Wright goal in the 36th minute. The quick cross pass from Racquel Mashall beat an outstretch Cara Santaga. But just four minutes later, Zapski scored again to put Saskatchewan up by two.
Santaga made three saves in the win for the Huskies, while Kacey McFee made 10 stops before being replaced by Ashton Lowry in the 79th minute.
The Huskies’ quarter-final is set for Sunday, October 26 at 12 p.m. on Field 7 in PotashCorp Park.
Match Notes: Jenelle Zapski set a program-best mark for goals in a single season with 14. The total tops Elizabeth Hudon’s 11 set in 2010. Zapski now has 29 career goals in three seasons with Saskatchewan. The 14 goals places her second on the Canada West season goals list.
