MONTREAL – Mariam Sylla of Conakry, Guinea, and Leland de Langley of Orangeville, Ont., are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Oct. 19, 2014.
Sylla, a 6-foot-1 forward was named Tournament MVP as the Martlets swept their own Redbird Classic basketball tourney last weekend with victories over Lakehead (68-51), Regina (73-41) and Toronto (68-59), respectively. The 22-year-old pharmacology junior, who was recently-named among the CIS Top 8 Academic All-Canadians, registered a pair of “double-doubles” to finish with 40 points and 25 rebounds in the three games. She shot 34.4 per cent from the field (11/32), made a stellar 17 of 18 free-throws and collected four assists to go along with a pair of steals. Priot to enrolling at McGill, Sylla starred in the CEGEP league for College Montmorency.
De Langley, a 5-foot-11, 180-pound forward on the lacrosse Redmen, scored seven goals and 12 points in three games last week, two of them victories. The 22-year-old senior in physical and health education tallied a career-high nine points, five of them goals, in a win over Concordia, Oct. 16. He enrolled at McGill in 2011 after playing for St. Andrews College.
Both athletes will receive a gift certificate from Ye Olde Orchard Pub.
