Thunderbirds finish runner up at 2014 Otter Invitational


Seaside, CA – The UBC Thunderbirds men’s golf team finished in second play at the 2014 Otter Invitational Golf Tournament hosted by CSU Monterey Bay at the Bayonet Course in Seaside, California. Nova Southeastern won the three round tournament with a final team score of +21, five shots better than the Thunderbirds.

The Bayonet Course is a par 72 with yardage of 6869.

In the team event UBC (297-295-298 = 893 ) moved up a spot on Tuesday thanks to the low team score of the day. Nova Southeastern (288-296-301 = 885) shot the low round of the tournament in Monday’s first round en route to victory. The hosts from CSU Monterey Bay (291-298-304 = 893) finished in third, three shots behind the Thunderbirds. 

Evan Holmes and Conner Kozak finished in a tie for third individually at +4, five shots behind Nova Southeastern’s Richard Mansell (71-71-73 = 215). He finished the event at -1.

Holmes (74-74-72 = 220), who has won two tournaments already this year, shot the low round of the day Tuesday carding four birdies and four bogeys for an even par 72. Kozak (75-71-74 = 220) had three birdie and five bogeys in his final round today.

Jack Wood (76-74-76 = 226) and Scott Secord (74-76-76 = 226) both shot rounds of 76 on Tuesday to finish in a tie for 13th at +10, 11 shots behind the winner.

Nate Ollis (74-76-79 = 229) rounded out the group, finishing in a tie for 29th at +13.

Meanwhile, six others players took part as individuals at the Victoria Vikes Shootout. The two round event was played at the Cordova Bay Golf Course in Victoria, BC.

Derek Hinchcliffe (72-75 = 147) was the top UBC player finishing in a tie for sixth at +5, four shots behind the winner from Victoria, Andrew Funk (72-71 = 143).

Trent Abraham (72-76 = 148) finished tied for ninth, Gavin McQueenie (75-74 = 149) tied for 15th, Scott Malo (73-78 = 152) finished at +9, tied for 22nd, Donald Qiu (80-72 =152) tied for 24th, and Brett Pasula (79-77 = 156) finished 35th overall at +14.
