(ISN) – VICTORIA, B.C. – The University of Victoria Vikes women’s golf team finished second in their two-day home tournament, the Vikes Golf Shootout, hosted at the Cordova Bay Golf Course in Victoria. The Vikes finished with a two-round score of 643, 23 strokes back of first-place UBC. Rookie Brianna Carrels was the top Vike, finishing second overall (153).
UBC’s Kat Kennedy finished first after a second-round score of 72 to finish off the tournament with a 150, three strokes ahead of Carrels. T-Birds teammate Reagan Wilson finished third (155), while Alberta’s Diane Strang was fourth (156).
“There is so much upside with Brianna,” said Justin Clews, Vikes golf head coach, about his top rookie’s performance. “She is well respected by her teammates and the most mature first-year student I know. Her strength is in her ball swinging. She always keeps it in play and her swing has good tempo, plus she has a strong short game.”
Shannon Raina was the next highest Vike on the team finishing tied for ninth with an 80-82 (162), while Michaela Abeyfinished with a 164 to tie for 13th. Emily Nicol shot 85 in her second round to finish 166, while Cari Chow improved her first round score from 88 to 83 to finish 171.
“Shannon struggled the last few tournaments but she took the last qualifying spot for this event after beating out three other girls last week,” added Clews. “I was really impressed with how she has improved since the last two tournaments and that’s going to be a good confidence booster for her moving forward.”
Competing as individuals, Cadence Hellman finished tied for 15th with 20-over 166, while Laura Ferreira shot 10 strokes better in round two to finish 24-over 170. Cassandra Paynter finished 28th after carding a 189.
Up next the Vikes women will prepare for the Cougar Fall Invitational, Nov. 2-4, in San Marcos, Calif.
