A number of Canadians are on the rosters of team in the 84-team, 16th annual Perfect Game WWBA World Championship in in Jupiter, Fla, as play began Thursday. ….

Games will be played at the spring training fields of the St. Louis Cardinals and Miami Marlins with three Canadian teams entered:

The Dbacks Langley Blaze from British Columbia as well as pick-ups by Arizona Diamondbacks scout Doug Mathieson, while coach Dan Bleiwas has two entries with the Ontario Blue Jays and Canada Perfect Game Gold. Dino Roumel handles the overlap. The other coaches are Mike Steed as pitching/associate head coach, Kyle MacKinnon, Greg Byron, Sean Travers, Kyle DeGrace and Joey (Weasey) Ellison.

The Ontario Blue Jays defeated the DBacks Langley Blaze 2-1 in their exhibition game. Liam Munshi (Our Lady of Mount Carmel HS, ON) started and earned the win for the Blue Jays tossing 4 shutout innings allowing just 2 hits and no walks, while striking out 4 batters with an impressive 75% strike percentage. Munshi used a long arm action and featured a 78-81/82 mph fastball with armside run and a 67-73 mph curveball.

Reese O’Farrell (2015, Notre Dame Catholic SS, ON) led the way for the Blue Jays’ offense going 2-3 with 1 double and 1 run scored. Austin Ferguson (2015, St Thomas Aquinas Catholic SS) added in a 1-4 day at the plate with 1 double and Owen Jansen (2016, Iroquois Ridge HS, ON) went 1-4 with 2 RBI.

For the Blaze, Austin Hoffman (2016, Alleghany HS, PA) went 1-3 with 1 double and Jeremi Longpre (2015, Yale Secondary HS, BC) went 1-3 with 1 double, 1 run scored and 1 stolen base.

Warhawks edge Canada PG Gold

The Ohio Warhawks defeated Canada PG Gold 4-2 in their exhibition game. Georgia State commit, Curtis Terry (2015, Archer HS, GA), helped power the Warhawks’ offense showing a short, compact swing and good bat speed as he went 1-2 with a solo home run. Auburn commit, Daino Deas (2015, Parkview HS, GA), added in a 1-2 performance with 1 triple and 1 run scored. Tyler Schmidt (2015, Crosswell-Lexington HS, MI), a Marshall commit, also impressed showing good extension and plate coverage going 1-3 with 1 triple and 1 run scored.

Arizona State commit, Peyton Culbertson (2015, Collierville HS, TN), earned the win out of the bullpen for the Warhawks tossing 1 perfect inning and recording 2 strikeouts. Culbertson used a sharp downhill motion and showed a quick arm with his 86-88 mph fastball while mixing in a 73-79 mph slider and a 76-78 mph changeup.

For Canada PG Gold, Lucas Parente (2017, Notre Dame Catholic SS, ON) showed a quiet hitting approach and good bat speed as he went 2-3 with 1 RBI.

Ben Braun (2015, Georgetown District HS, ON) took the loss for Canada PG Gold, but showed well in 5 innings of work allowing 3 runs, 2 earned, on 5 hits and 2 walks, while striking out 7 batters. Braun’s arm worked well and he was around the plate with his aggressive 73-77/78 mph fastball, 68-72 mph changeup that flashed potential, and a 60-64 mph curveball he featured as an outpitch.
