COTE ST. LUC, QUE. — Sophomore Adriano Petrangelo of Montreal, Que. pitched a complete game shutout Friday afternoon at Trudeau Park, propelling McGill to a 8–0 win over the UNB Varsity Reds in their opening Canadian Collegiate Baseball Association Championship match.

The 6-foot-3 Petrangelo racked up an impressive eight strikes, allowing just three hits. In addition to his flawless effort on the mound, Petrangelo also received great run support from McGill’s bats.

Redmen shortstop Tyler Welence of Ridgewood, N.J. and third-baseman Robert Sedin of Sunnyvale, Cal. each brought in a run to open up at 2–0 McGill lead in the first. Sedin went 2-for-2 on the afternoon.

McGill really came out swinging in the third and fourth innings, however, adding three runs apiece to extend the lead to eight. Redmen catcher Steven Rintoul, who lead the day with 2 RBI, got the ball rolling with a double that scored Jamie Fuoco and Zachary Aaron.

Outfielders Alexander Levis and Rocky Hroch, and first-baseman James Vardy also each chipped in an RBI during McGill’s scoring stretch.

New Brunswick starting pitcher Adam Kerr gave up five earned runs on six hits in just three innings of work, taking the loss for the Varsity Reds.

Prior to Friday, the last matchup between McGill and UNB was the 2008 Canadian Intercollegiate Baseball Association championship final, won by the Varsity Reds.

UNB will next play a Saturday morning matchup against the Concordia Stingers at 10 a.m. Meanwhile, McGill takes on Saint Mary’s in the 8 p.m. game Friday night.
