COTE ST. LUC, Que. — Sophomore James Vardy of Pointe Claire, Que., tossed a complete game one-hitter as McGill University tamed the Saint Mary’s Huskies 6-1 to complete a doubleheader sweep on Day 1 at Trudeau Park, Friday, in the Canadian Collegiate Baseball Association championship tournament.
The Redmen clobbered UNB 8-0 in the first game.
Vardy struck out eight Huskies while allowing no earned runs and just one walk. His no-hitter bid was broken up by SMU’s Joey Brown in the second inning.
Vardy and Huskies starter Keegan Gaskell appeared to be in a tight pitching duel through three innings, that is until McGill broke the game wide open in the fourth.
Redmen outfielder Rocky Hroch of Temecula, Calif., drove in the game’s first run with a single to right field, sparking momentum that allowed McGill to score at least one run in four straight innings.
Shortstop Tyler Welence of Ridgewood, N.J., went 3-for-4 at the plate with one run batted in for McGill. Teammate Robert Sedin, a third-baseman from Sunnyvale, Cal., was 1-for-3 and led all players with a pair of RBIs.
Gaskell took the loss for Saint Mary’s, surrendering nine hits, four walks, one hit batsman and four earned runs over six innings. He only struck out two.
Saint Mary’s, which has lost their first two games of the tourney, will look to turn it around against the winless Holland College Hurricanes, Saturday at 1 p.m. As for the undefeated Redmen (2-0), they resume play Saturday at 10 a.m. when they take on their cross-town rivals from the Unversity Montreal (2-0) in a showdown of undefeated teams at Trudeau Park. Mcgill won three of five regular season meetings with UdeM this fall.
