(ISN) – VICTORIA – The University of Victoria Vikes men’s and women’s cross-country teams head to Abbotsford to compete at the BC Cross-Country Championships on Saturday, Oct. 25 at Clearbrook Park. The women will compete on a 6-km course at 2:30 p.m., followed by the men in the 10-km distance at 3:00 p.m.
“This will be our final prep for CIS Nationals,” said head coach Brent Fougner, whose team will compete at nationals on Nov. 8 in Newfoundland. “I’m hoping for some real cross-country weather this weekend with lots of rain and mud to toughen the team up heading into CIS championships”.

The Vikes women are looking to make a strong statement this weekend with a squad of eight toeing the line. The ladies will be led by fifth-year captain Kendra Pomfret, fourth-year Shauna McKinnis and second-year Brittany King. Pomfret, returning this year from injury for her final year of eligibility, is proving to be in top form after opening up the season with two solid races in Stanford and Bellingham. The Victoria women’s team is currently ranked No. 6 in the Top-10 CIS Polls.
The Victoria men’s team are currently ranked No. 5 in the CIS Top-10 Polls. This weekend’s roster of 10 will be led by fourth-year Jackson Bocksnick, third-year Olivier Collinand CIS first-team all Canadian Ryan Cassidy. The men will be building the momentum after their second-place finish at the Viking Annual Western Washington Classic in Bellingham, Wash.

This weekend’s provincial championship course in Abbotsford is tough and fast with a mix of grass and trails. It is relatively flat with power hills, which will translate well to the course expected at CIS Nationals.
The B.C. cross-country Championships on Oct. 25 will give the Vikes a chance to compete against some of the best teams in Western Canada, including Trinity Western, who are currently ranked No. 2 in the country. This will be final tune up before heading east for CIS National Championships in St. John’s, Newfoundland on Nov. 8.
