(ISN) – VICTORIA – The University of Victoria men’s and women’s rowing teams will host the Head of the Gorge and Tail of the Gorge regattas this weekend, Oct. 25 and 26, respectively.

This is the first Tail of the Gorge Sunday regatta as it replaces the previous Head of the Elk regatta that typically followed the Saturday Head of the Gorge. The weekend regattas come following second-place team finishes for both the men and women’s crews at the Western Canadian University Rowing Championships in Calgary, Alta. last weekend, Oct. 18. This weekend will be the last competition before the Vikes host the Canadian University Rowing National Championships (CURC’s) at Elk Lake, from Nov.1-2.

The course for Saturday’s Head of the Gorge is unique as crews fire off at 15-second intervals and pass as many boats as possible until they reach the Tillicum Narrows, which features a no-passing zone. Following the Narrows, the boats can pass again until the finish line making for an entertaining and exciting spectator event.

The newly-formed Tail of the Gorge starts at Portage Inlet under the arches of the newly completed Craigflower Bridge and finishes just shy of the Esquimalt Gorge Park. It runs in the opposite direction of the Head of the Gorge and the opening of the Craigflower Bridge allows for the opportunity for the event to be hosted at the same waterway.

“It is a really exciting event for fans to watch and it will be great to have Vikes Nation present,” said men’s rowing head coach Aalbert Van Schothorst. “It is a good showcase of Western Canadian Rowing before the Canadian University Rowing Championships next week.”

Vikes Nation shuttle busses will be available to offer transportation for fans at UVic to commute to the Gorge waterway and UVic residents are asked to email reslife@uvic.ca to sign up for a bus seat and more information.

The Head of the Gorge competition will begin on Oct. 25 at 10:30 a.m. and the Tail of Gorge commences at 10:45 a.m. on Oct. 26. Click here for complete information. For more information, click here.
