TROIS-RIVIERES, Que The men’s 4×100 metre freestyle relay won gold for McGill at the RSEQ conference’s second Coupe de Quebec swim meet, held at the University du Quebec a Trois-Rivieres on Saturday. The team of Gabriel Fortin from Brossard, Que., Marc-Andre Benoit of St. Hyacinthe, Que., Erik Cheng of Ile-Bizard, Que., and Michael Luck of Beaconsfield, Que., touched the wall at three minutes, 28.87 seconds, some 2.5 seconds ahead of second-place Laval.

Cheng also won a silver in the 50 breastroke (30:30) and bronze in 100 breast (1:06.91). Other medal winners on the men’s side included Luck, a sprinter who claimed bronze in both the 50 breast (30:31) and 50 freestyle (23:90). David Whiteside of Burlington, Ont., was second in the 200 free (1:55.98), Rhys Johnson of Calgary, was second in the 200 back (2:09.48) and Marc-Andre Benoit, who was third in the 200 free (1:56.34).

There were no individual medals won by the McGill women’s squad but they managed two bronze medals in the relay events:

The quartet of Katie Caldwell of White Rock, B.C., Fanny Gervais-Cartier of Ile Bizard, Simone Cseplo of Toronto and Yeeun Chung from Vancouver, B.C., completed the 4×100 free in 3:56.12.

The 4×100 individual medley, which was clocked in  4:22.55, featured Caldwell in leadoff, followed by Valerie DeBroux of Beaconsfield,Que., the aforementioned Gervais-Cartier and Chung.

McGill head coach Peter Carpenter was pleased with the progress of both teams so early in the season and happy with the breakout swim of rookie Jessica Warrack, who made the qualification time for CIS nationals in 400 IM with a time of 4:59.34.

“It wasn’t a best time but for her to have swam that fast in October, is very exciting, as the 400 IM is the kind of event that generally needs a peak meet for a really great performance,” said Carpenter.  “We are swimming so much faster as a team than we were last year at this time, yet we are scoring less points, mainly due to the strength of the league, which has especially improved on the women’s side.”
