Redmen baseball team celebrate playoff victory at 2014 CCBA championship

COTE ST. LUC, Que — Starting pitcher Tim Jones went the distance as McGill University cruised to a 6-1 victory over Concordia to capture the Canadian Collegiate Baseball Association championship, Sunday, at Gary Carter Field on the grounds of Trudeau Park.

It was McGill’s fourth national baseball title, to go with championships won under the old CIBA banner in 1994, 2006 and 2010.

Concordia outhit McGill 7-6 but stranded nine runners on base. Jones racked up eight strikeouts and allowed no earned runs on seven hits and two walks over seven innings.

Tyler Welence led McGill’s offence getting on base three times, including a third-inning single and a sixth inning double.

Concordia starter Brandon Berkovits was charged with the loss. He lasted just 3 1/3 innings, walked three, struck out five, and allowed five runs.

A second-inning rally resulted in McGill pushing two runs across the plate on an RBI double by James Vardy and a fielder’s choice.

Concordia quickly replied with their only run on the day on a sacrifice fly by Alex Hall.

McGill pushed across another run in both the fourth inning and the sixth. In the fourth, the Redmen scored on an RBI single by Rob Sedin, scoring James Vardy.
