MONTREAL — Ryan Kramer struck out 13 batters in a masterful complete game three-hitter as McGill blanked Universite de Montreal 2–0 in a national semifinal at the Canadian Collegiate Baseball Association championships, Sunday, at Lake Road Park in suburban Dollard-des-Ormeaux.

McGill advances to the CCBA championship final, where they’ll face the Concordia Stingers in a rematch of the North Division final, won 3–1 in Game 3 by Concordia. First pitch goes at 3 p.m. Sunday afternoon.

Kramer, a 6-foot-2, 170-pound right-hander, allowed only four batters to reach base, including one walk, giving McGill the chance to hold onto the two-run lead they established by the third inning.

“I was able to work ahead in the count all game,” said Kramer who threw 70 strikes in a 110-pitch performance. “Montreal is a good hitting team so I tried to work backwards and get ahead with my off-speed pitches to keep them off balance.”

the Redmen had revenge on its mind coming in, having been toppled by UdeM 9–2 just one day earlier. Head coach and field manager Jason Starr realized that his team’s pitching needed to be the difference in the semis.

“We knew coming in this would be a tight game and Kramer gave us the pitching performance we expected. We played small ball and got the runs we needed,” Starr explained.

Redmen shortstop Tyler Welence of Ridgewood, N.J. finished with the only RBI on the day, while five other McGill players each had one hit. McGill’s fielding, however, was in the zone on Sunday, allowing Kramer to rest easy on the mound.

“The defence was great behind me — Jamie Fuoco made a couple great grabs and Steven Rintoul was awesome behind the plate like he has been all season,” Kramer said. “We’re a gritty team and we’ve battled all season. We just stuck to what we do best and it worked out today.”
