SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — A third period goal by senior forward Brooks Bertsch lifted No. 9 St. Cloud State (2-2-0, 0-0-0 NCHC) to a 3-2 victory at No. 2 Union (N.Y.) (5-1-0, 0-0-0 ECAC) on Saturday night. The victory snapped a 17-game win streak for Union, the defending national champions.
Bertsch lit the lamp with his even-strength marker at 8:18 of the third period, which pushed the final score to 3-2.
In the closing minutes of play, Union pulled its goalie to gain the extra skater but SCSU netminder Charlie Lindgren shut the Dutchmen down with 10 saves in the final period for a total of 22 saves and the victory.
Union opened the game’s offense at 18:41 of the first period with a goal by Spencer Foo, with Daniel Ciampini and JC Brassard each notching assists on the score. SCSU outshot Union 15-6 to set the tempo early.
In the second period, SCSU broke the shutout with a power play marker by Andrew Prochno at 1:19. David Morley provided the assist on the play, which was Prochno’s first of the season. SCSU’s Blake Winiecki provided the Huskies with a 2-1 lead at 5:22 of the second with his first collegiate goal. Murray and Morley each had assists on the goal by Winiecki.
SCSU was called for a crease violation at the end of the second period after a scrum in front of the net. The penalty provided the Dutchmen with a rare penalty shot situation, which resulted in a goal by Mike Vecchione at 19:46 of the second period.
In the game, SCSU ended up outshooting Union by a 39-24 margin. On the power play, SCSU was 1-for-6 and Union was 0-for-5 in the game.
