ST. CATHERINES.— Adike Peter-McNeilly scored a game-high 20 points as the Ryerson Rams defeated McGill 69-64 to finish second at the eight-tam RBC Classic preseason men’s basketball tournament at Brock University’s Bob Davies Gymnasium, Sunday.
Ryerson swept all three games, including a 90-62 decision over UQAM on Friday and a 82-66 win over Fraser Valley, Saturday.
McGill, whose lone tourney victory was a commanding 83-60 decision over York on Saturday, finished in fifth place with a 1-2 record. The Redmen opened with an 80-74 loss to Windsor on Friday.
McGill struggled offensively in their final matchup, shooting 35.4 per cent from the field, including a 5-for-19 performance from beyond the arc.
Dele Ogundokun, a sophomore from Hamilton, Ont., led McGill in scoring with 15 points. He shot 5-for-11 from the floor, draining three from downtown. The economics and accounting major was also named to the second team all-tournament squad, tallying 45 points and 15 assists over the weekend.
Teammate Michael Peterkin, a fellow sophomore from Toronto, was the only other Redmen player to reach double figures against Ryerson. He tallied 12 points, shooting 3-for-6 from the field, including one trey and a 5-for-5 performance from the line.
Peter-McNeilly was one of three Rams to reach double figures in scoring, He was joined by seniors Jahmal Jones (16) and Jordon Gauthier (11).
Ryerson led 17-11 after the opening quarter and took a 33-24 lead into halftime. The Rams never faltered, outscoring McGill 20-18 in the third frame, giving them enough to hang on for a five point victory.
The Redmen finished their preseason schedule with a 4-9 record, including 4-5 against CIS teams. They will now begin to prepare for their RSEQ regular season slate which starts at home Nov.8 against Bishop’s.
