(ISN) – The first period was wide open the shots 19-15 Brandon the wheat kings struck first on a deflected shot from the point on the pp. the royals got into penalty trouble in the first but killed off being 2 man down then another call shorty after.
That gave the royals momentum as they started getting chances finally capitalizing on a Travis brown boomer from the point on the power play to tie it at one, assists to Axel Blomqvist and Joe Hicketts. The second period was like a feel out period for both teams with very little flow, the shots in the 2nd were 5-4 for for Brandon and the second frame lacked intensity and emotion. So much little intensity infact that that Royals coach Dave Lowry called a strange time out at the 9:25 mark before a faceoff in their zone to the left of Coleman Vollrath .
Jack Palmer was waiting a long time for the puck drop yaking with the wheat kings player who was his mate before in Brandon just before he was acquired by Cam Hope last year before the trade deadline, Brad was going back to the circle after Lowry’s timeout only to be called back and replaced before the draw. The wheat kings player was also replaced by Brandon’s coach Kelly McCrimond before the faceoff. After that sequence McCrimond called his own time out 3 minutes later. In all my years watching hockey, 43 now I’ve never seen 3 consecutive timeouts mid game,it seems like both coaches were getting on their teams for a lack of effort. Shots in the 2nd were 5-4 Brandon, each team traded goals in the period, Campbell for Brandon and 14:03 Axel Blomqvist with his 2nd point of the game for the Royals 16:55.
In the 3rd the defensive battle continued Ryan Pilon scored the winner for the wheat kings at 11:34, a point blast that Coleman Vollrath couldn’t see through the traffic in front. In was a good defensive effort against the best team in the WHL early in the season but the team offensively was lacking intensity. The goaltending by Coleman Vollrath was outstanding and so was the penalty kill. This weekend vs. The Tri City Americans and their star goaltender Eric Comrie , we must have more intensity offensively and get more traffic in front and pucks to the net or we might see more of the same and have long game to watch.
