Vancouver BC – The UBC Thunderbirds women’s volleyball team will play host to the UBC Okanagan Heat this weekend for a double header at War Memorial Gymnasium.
The Thunderbirds (3-3) are coming off of a big win in Kamloops last Saturday, as they responded to their disappointing Friday loss with a straight sets victory over Thompson River University in Saturday’s game. The Thunderbirds will be looking to harness the momentum from that victory for this weekend’s match-up against their fellow UBC rival.
The Heat have had a strong start to the season so far, with a 4-2 record under their belt. They are tied for third place in the competitive Canada West. UBC are currently in a four-way tie for fifth place with a 3-3 record on the season so far.
Last season UBC defeated UBCO in all three of its match ups, with scores of 3-1, 3-0 and 3-1 respectively.
UBC will be looking to their leaders for a strong performance this weekend. Left side player Alissa Coulter had one of the best weekends of her career as a Thunderbird last weekend. She led her team in points during both matches against Thompson Rivers University with 14 points in Friday’s match and 15 in Saturday’s game in which she was instrumental to UBC’s sweep of TRU. Coulter is a Kinesiology student, originally from Calgary and is in her fourth season with the Thunderbirds. She has been a starter in all six games this season.
The Thunderbirds have been looking to build the confidence and stability of their young team this season, and this weekend will be another opportunity to demonstrate their ongoing development of the fresh talent of the group.
Friday’s game starts at 6:00 pm and Saturday’s game at 5:00 pm Both will be played at UBC’s War Memorial Gym and can be watched live via webcast at canadawest.tv.
