Saskatoon, SK – The UBC Thunderbirds men’s soccer head to Saskatoon this weekend for the Canada West final four to battle for a spot in the CIS National Championship Tournament and a chance to win a third straight national title.
UBC (9-2-1) will face the University of Alberta (6-3-3) in Friday’s semi final at 10:30 am PST. The winner will claim one of two Canada West spots in the national championship in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island beginning Thursday, November 6th. The other semi final will feature the host Saskatchewan Huskies (9-1-2) taking on Victoria (8-1-3).
The UBC Thunderbirds looked very sharp against UBC Okanagan in the Canada West quarter-final last Friday, defeating the Heat 3-0.
Alberta meanwhile defeated its provincial rivals from Calgary 1-0 to earn a trip to the Canada West Final Four. Because of the new schedule format this season, teams from the pacific division and prairie division only played within their own division, so this weekend will be the Thunderbirds first trip outside the province and first meeting of the year versus the Golden Bears.
UBC should have all their influential players ready for Friday’s game and head coach Mike Mosher looks forward to the return of holding midfielder Harry Lakhan. He missed the quarter-final game due to injury.
On Saturday, the two semi-final winners will face off for the Canada West Championship at 1:00 pm PST. The losers will play in the bronze medal game at 10:30 am PST.
Last season UBC defeated Saskatchewan 6-1 in the Canada West final before going on to win the CIS National Championship over Laval 3-1.
