SHERBROOKE — The McGill women’s volleyball team took trick or treat to the max in Sherbrooke on Halloween Friday. They played tricks on an unsuspecting Vert & Or squad and then treated themselves to a stunning 3-1 road victory in a city that has been very unwelcoming to the Martlets for many years.

It was McGill’s first road victory at Sherbrooke since Jan. 29, 2011, snapping a seven-game losing streak there.

The victory, by set scores of 25-23, 25-17, 23-25 and 25-18, took an hour and 56 minutes to play and was especially meaningful for McGill head coach Rachele Beliveau, a fomer Canadian Olympian and native of Sherbrooke who once starred on the court for the Vert & Or and was inducted to their sports hall of fame.

“It was a great that we were able to stay focussed through the whole game, it was their home opener, in front of a large and very loud crowd,” said Beliveau, who has racked up a 512-463-2 record overall in her 24 seasons as bench boss at McGill. “We played a good game in general, a little tentative at times but we were patient, played a good team game and were able to pull it off. It’s been a while that we beat them in their own gym.”

The McGill offence was led by three players, namely Catherine Amyot, Marie-Christine Lapointe and Ashley Norfleet.
