McGill misses mark in Maine as Black Bears beat Martlets

ORONO, Maine — The Martlets couldn’t contain a fierce Black Bears attack as the University of Maine doubled up McGill 81–41 in their final exhibition tune-up, Saturday.

With the loss, McGill finishes the preseason with a 5–2 record, including one win and one loss against NCAA Div. I opponents. Said win came in their opening exhibition game against Manhattan College, a 68–46 win back on Sept. 21.

While Maine shot consistently well all game long, McGill simply couldn’t match, shooting a lacklustre 25.9% from the field. The Black Bears ran the court from the opening tip-off, opening up a 22–7 run and establishing a double-digit midway through the first quarter that would hold up the rest of the game. McGill could only mustre four points in the last ten minutes of the second quarter and found themselves down 46–19 by halftime.

The Martlets didn’t fare much better in the second half, as Maine went on a 19–4 run to start the second half and a 14–4 run to close with, with McGill finding themselves down by as much as 42 points in the third quarter.

Maine senior Courtney Alexander led all scorers with 19 points, nailing all seven shots she took. Third-year McGill forward Mariam Sylla of Conakry, Guinea and fourh-year forward Gabriela Hebert of Chicoutimi tied for the team lead with eight points, while Sylla posted 11 rebounds.

The Martlets will start their regular season on their home court next Saturday (Nov. 8) against Bishop’s. Tip-off at Love Competition Hall goes at 6 p.m.
