Thunderbirds lead after day one at the Odium Brown Colleges Cup

Erika Seltenreich-Hodgson

Vancouver, BC – The UBC Thunderbirds swim team has a commanding lead after day one at the Odlum Brown Colleges Cup at the UBC Aquatic Centre. The Thunderbirds are first with 980 points (combined men and women), Calgary is second with 648, followed by the Lower Mainland High School All-Stars in third with 581 points.

Hosting the meet for the first time since 2006 a number of records were broken with some impressive swims by the Thunderbirds. Erika Seltenreich-Hodgson crushed the women’s 400m individual medley in a meet record time of 4:36.60. She also finished second in the women’s 200m breaststroke behind teammated Tera Van Beilen, who clocked a winning time of 2:28.11. Van Beilen also won the 50m breastroke in a time of 31.68. Other winners on the women’s side included Fionnuala Pierse in the 100m freestyle in a meet record time, Savannah King in the 400m freestyle, Erin Stamp in the 100m individual medley, Charlotte Philpotts in the 50m butterfly, and the relay team in the 4x100m freestyle event.

On the men’s side Sergey Holson, like Van Beilen, won the double in the breaststroke, taking home top spot in the 50m and 200m events. Stefan Milosevic broke Brent Hayden’s meet record in the 100m freestyle to win. Newcomer Keegan Zanatta had an impressive swim in the 400m freestyle setting a new meet record time of 3:46.81 and Jonathan Brown was the other men’s winner in the 100m individual medley. The men also won the 4x100m freestyle relay.

“The last time we hosted this event was 2006 so to actually get a meet back here before Christmas time and get all these teams to come has been great,” said UBC head coach Steve Price. “The format of the meet actually sets up so our team has to race against each other in the morning to get through to the second swims, so they really stepped up in the heats and threw down and competed hard against each other and the rest of the field and then stepped up again tonight.”

The format of the meet only allows three swimmers from each team to go through to the evening ‘A’ and ‘B’ finals and the most you can have in one final is two swimmers from your team.

“Overall I’m pretty pleased with the first day,” said Price. “Jacomie Strydom had a pretty good morning, swimming pretty fast. Erika Seltenreich-Hodgson has been swimming quite well and showed some big swims tonight. On the guys side we had pretty good balance all the way around. Stefan Milosevic did a good job breaking Hayden’s meet record so pretty solid there and Keegan Zanatta has been great, the record in the 400m free was impressive.”

The two-day event wraps up tomorrow with heats starting at 9:00 am and finals at 3:00 pm at the UBC Aquatic Centre.
