2014 Odlum Brown Colleges Cup Pacific

(ISN) – Victoria, B.C. – The University of Victoria Vikes added three swimmers to the CIS qualification list after day one of 2014 Odlum Brown Colleges Cup Pacific at the UBC Aquatic Centre. Jon McKay, Jordan Stariha and Rachael Newman met CIS standards in the opening day of the two-day event features every Canada West school, minus Alberta, plus a lower mainland high school all-star team.

The Vikes fell short of earning any medals as McKay, Stariha and Newman had fourth-place finishes in the 200 Fly, 200 BR and 200 Fly, respectively. Rookie Rosie Moulton finished eighth in the 400 IM and seventh in the 200 BR.

“It was a challenging format with lots of racing in a very short time frame,” described Vikes swimming coach Ryan Clouston after the race day. “Our Vikes swam well for this time of the season and we are definitely looking forward to tomorrow’s events.”

McKay finished fourth in the 200 Fly in a time of 2:04.44 behind Simon Fraser’s Saveli Yungman (2:04.27), while Calgary’s Thomas Jobin took first in 2:02.72. McKay also finished fifth in the 400 FR in a time of 3:59.90. Former Vike and now third-year Thunderbird Keegan Zanatta touched in for gold in 3:45.81.

With the Canada West Swimming Championships moving from January to November this season, this event is one of the first events the Vikes get to see what the rest of the conference has to offer.

The 2015 CIS Championship will be hosted in Victoria in February.

On Sunday, November 2 heats begin at 9:00 am and finals are at 3:00 pm.
