Mariners cap weekend sweep with three-set win over Cascades

The Vancouver Island University Mariners completed a weekend sweep of the UFV Cascades, winning in three straight sets on Saturday.

The Cascades (3-3) had pushed the Mariners (5-1) to five sets in Friday’s defeat, ultimately succumbing 16-14 in the fifth. The rematch wasn’t as close, as VIU prevailed 25-19, 27-25, 25-21.

“Again, we didn’t get off to a good start and it put us in a tough spot,” Cascades coach Kyle Donen said. “Our passing wasn’t the best, but we found our way and we battled. At certain points in the match, we just couldn’t get some breaks. Sometimes that’s just how it goes on the road. We couldn’t sustain momentum.”

Right side Joel Kleingeltink set the pace offensively for the Cascades, racking up 12 kills, while Kurtis Stromdahl and Adam Chaplin notched 10 apiece.

UFV wraps up the first-semester schedule with six straight home games, beginning Nov. 7-8 vs. the Capilano Blues at the Envision Athletic Centre (women 6 p.m., men 8 p.m. both nights).

“I think the emphasis is that it’s an important weekend,” Donen said. “Cap is currently at the bottom of the league, and we need to get back in the win column ourselves. It’s a chance to get back to what we do well, and find our comfort zone again at home.”
