OTTAWA (CIS) – The reigning University Cup champion Alberta Golden Bears (9-1) top the CIS men’s hockey rankings for the sixth time in as many media national polls this season, and for the second straight week were the only team to receive first-place votes.
The second-ranked Acadia Axemen (7-1), No. 3 UNB Varsity Reds (6-1-1) and No. 4 Windsor Lancers (9-0) also hold on to their previous position this week.
Rounding out the new poll are the No. 5 Calgary Dinos (8-2 / up one), No. 6 UQTR Patriotes (7-1 / down one), No. 7 Saint Mary’s Huskies (6-1-1 / up two), No. 8 Mount Royal Cougars (6-4 / down one), No. 9 Carleton Ravens (6-2 / previously unranked) and No. 10 Moncton Aigles Bleus (5-2-1 / down two).
It was a good week for nationally-ranked teams, with the top seven all going 2-for-2 in the past seven days. Carleton also posted two wins over the weekend, 3-2 and 6-1 home victories against Lakehead, to make its way into the Top 10.
The No. 1 Golden Bears continued to roll, extending their winning streak to nine games with 7-1 and 4-3 triumphs over Top-10 foe Mount Royal. While they dominated the series opener Friday night in Edmonton, the Bears prevailed in Saturday’s rematch in Calgary thanks to a three goals in a span of 3:46 in the last eight minutes of regulation.
The University Cup champs travel to Winnipeg this weekend for a two-game set against Manitoba.
This week’s schedule is highlighted by a pair of Top-10 battles in the Atlantic conference on Friday night, including Saint Mary’s at Acadia and UNB at Moncton. Both contests are set for 7 p.m. Atlantic, live on AUStv.ca.
