Men¹s eight golden as Vikes take second overall at National Championship

(ISN) – VICTORIA – The University of Victoria Vikes men’s rowing team wrapped up their performance at the 18th Canadian University Rowing Championship at Elk Lake in golden fashion. The men’s eight powered their way to a first-place finish, while the Vikes finished second overall in the team standings

The UBC Thunderbirds edged the Vikes by four points in the team standings to win the national banner, while Brock took third. UBC finished with 106 points, UVic with 102 and Brock with 85. Defending champions Western finished fourth with 80 points.

Adam Donaldson, Christopher Marshall, Alex Walker, Elyas Forstbauer, Mark Davies, Connor McGuigan, Maxim Ellison, Sam Horn and cox Jacob Koudys finished in 5:39.73 to win the men’s eight. Brock (5:41.33) edged the T-Birds (5:42.12) for silver, while Western settled for fourth in 5:43.52.

The Vikes started the morning off well as Walker and Lee Hall defended their title in the lightweight men’s double for the third-straight year. Walker and Hall earned gold in 6:44.82, ahead of UBC (6:52.22) and Trent (6:55.45).

Two bronze medals followed as Maxim Ellison and Christopher Marshall finished third in the men’s pair in 7:11.63. Western took gold in 7:05.78, while Brock took silver in 7:09.14.

The lightweight coxed four also earned a bronze medal as Hall, Andrew Hendrickson, Sam Garber, Andy Muth, Jacob Koudys raced in 6:36.11, just behind UBC (6:28.29) and Brock (6:29.23).

Mark Davies finished sixth in the single in 8:03.76, while Sam Garber finished fifth in the lightweight single in 7:31.42.

The 2015 Canadian University Rowing Championship will return out east to Antigonish, Nova Scotia as St. Francis Xavier will host the 19th annual event.
