Vikes swimmers claim one silver, one bronze in final day

(ISN) – Victoria, B.C. – University of Victoria Vikes second-year swimmer Jon McKay brought home a silver medal in the 1500-m freestyle on the second and final day of the 2014 Odlum Brown Colleges Cup Pacific at the UBC Aquatic Centre on Nov. 2.


McKay touched in in a time of 15:27.08, nine seconds behind former Vike and now third-year UBC Thunderbird, Keegan Zanatta, who earned gold in 15.18.47.

Stamina for rookie Jessie Ogden paid off as the Victoria native took third place in the women’s 800-m freestyle (9:18.62). Ahead of Ogden were Thunderbirds Savannah King, who won gold in 8:34.11, and Maia Brundage, who came second in 8:50.50.

The Vikes fell short of earning any medals for the sprint races, with first year Ryan Howe finishing fourth in the 50-m backstroke (27.43), just behind Lethbridge third year Nick van der Sloot. Vike Brett Zollen also finished fourth in the 50-m freestyle with a time of 23.90, just 0.14 seconds behind bronze medalist Dan Pham of Calgary (23.76), silver medallist Arthur Kroitor of Manitoba (23.79), and Thunderbird Alex Loginov, who touched in for gold in 22.77.

Vikes Jennifer Short, Rachael Newman and Ogden had fourth-place finishes in the 100-m breaststroke, 100-m butterfly and 200-m freestyle, respectively. First-year Vike Rosie Moulton came in fifth in the 200-m individual medley with 2:21.86 on the stopwatch, while Taylor Snowden-Richardson also placed fifth in the women’s 200-m freestyle in 2:12.99. The Vikes placed fourth in the women’s 4×100 medley race. The Vikes men’s and women’s swimming teams finished fourth overall with a combined team score of 762 points. Hosts UBC took first with 1674 points, while Calgary finished second overall with 1158.

Up next the Vikes will return to the pool for the two-day Island Cup Invitational scheduled to take place at the Commonwealth Pool in Victoria, B.C. on Nov. 8 and 9.
