 Norminton named CCAA Cross-Country Running Coach of the Year

Nov. 7, 2014 – Matthew Norminton of Concordia University of Alberta has been named the CCAA Cross-Country Coach of the Year.

Norminton received the award at a banquet during the 2014 CCAA Cross-Country Running National Championships in Calgary, Alberta.

The Thunder coach guided his men’s team to the ACAC Championship title, while his women’s team placed fifth at provincials.

“Concordia, the ACAC, and the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association are very lucky to have Matt contributing to their success,” said Bill Corcoran, the CCAA’s cross-country running convenor.

Concordia participated in four ACAC Grand Prix races this fall with the men’s team winning three of those events. The women’s team placed third three times and for the first time in school history, both Thunder teams were ranked nationally.

Norminton was once one of the top runners in the ACAC with Grant MacEwan Community College. He was a talented and intense competitor but very respectful of his competition.

After he started coaching at Concordia, the program really took off according to Corcoran. “Matt has taken Concordia from “also ran” status to one of the top programs in the ACAC,” he said.

Norminton is the buyer for Running Room, also coaches at the Running Room Elite club and he organizes a number of races, meets and series every year. He, along with 2013 Coach of the Year Jamie Grant of SAIT, was also instrumental in getting the ACAC Indoor Track Program established.

“Matt eats, breathes and lives running,” said Corcoran. “His energy and dedication to the sport are legendary.”

As CCAA Coach of the Year, Norminton receives a customized ring provided by Jostens Canada, the official ring supplier of the CCAA national championship awards banquet.

OTHER NOMINEES

OCAA: At the OCAA Championships, Teresa Arnini guided the Humber Hawks to gold in the women’s team event and silver in the men’s team event. On the women’s individual side, Arnini coached a gold medalist (Lindsay Webster), bronze medalist (Coby Phillips) and three First Team All Stars (Webster, Phillips and Ivon Jaimes). Arnini also coaches Humber’s Indoor Track Program.

ACAA: Joy Galloway-Jones led the Dalhousie Agricultural Campus Rams to silver medal finishes in both men’s and women’s team events at the ACAA Cross-Country Championships. Dalhousie also picked up a pair of medals in individual competition. Hannah Arseneault captured gold in the women’s race, while Oscar Moyles earned bronze in the men’s event.
