Cascades blast Blues in three sets

The University of the Fraser Valley men’s volleyball team cruised past the Capilano Blues on Friday, winning in three sets at the Envision Athletic Centre.

With the victory (27-25, 25-11, 25-21), the Cascades improved to 4-3 while denying the Blues (0-5) their first win of the PacWest regular season.

In the aftermath, though, UFV head coach Kyle Donen expressed his belief that his team is capable of playing better than they showed on Friday. It’s all part of building a culture of high standards for the first-year bench boss.

“At the end of the day, we came away with the victory, and that’s the part that matters,” Donen said. “But I think we still could be better. We’ll talk about what we need to do to be a little bit better on executing tomorrow.

“They (the Blues) gave up a lot of points on their own errors – they were on the net a lot, they missed some digs that they’d probably like to have back. I expect them to be a lot better tomorrow and a lot crisper, and it’ll be a better battle because of that. But I expect us to be better tomorrow, too.”

After eking out a two-point win in the first set, the Cascades heated up from the service line en route to a lopsided win in the second.

“So far this season, our serving has been our extra weapon here at home, and we used it again tonight,” Donen said. “I hope that trend continues tomorrow.”

Outside hitter Kurtis Stromdahl had a big night, hammering down 14 kills, while Adam Chaplin and Robert Koenig notched eight kills apiece. Chaplin led the service brigade with three aces, and Chris Yuill came up with a team-high nine digs.

The two programs meet again on Saturday, with the women playing at 6 p.m. followed by the men at 8 p.m. at UFV’s Envision Athletic Centre.
