MONTREAL — Valerie Lemay scored a game-high 13.5 points as No.1-ranked Laval swept McGill 3-0 in RSEQ women’s volleyball at Love Competition Hall, Friday. The Rouge et Or, who won by set scores of 25-21, 25-22 and 25-23, improved their perfect record to 6-0. Laval has won an impressive 18 of 19 sets this season.

It was the second straight loss for the injury-plagued Martlets, who dropped to 4-2 on the season. Teammates Ashley Norfleet, a junior power-hitter from Brossard, Que., and Marie-Christine Lapointe, a fifth-year setter from St. Jean, Que., each registered nine kills and 10.5 points in a losing cause.

“We were hesitating a lot and thinking too much out there, ” said McGill head coach Rachele Beliveau whose troops struggled to find their rhythm as a team with freshman starter Myriam Robitaille the latest to join all-Canadian libero Daphnee-Maude Andre-Morin on the sidelines due to injury.

Among the few bright spots for McGill was the consistent play of senior Marie-Pier Durivage and junior Catherine Amyot.

Durivage , a fifth-year science major from St. Nicholas, Que., registered six kills, five digs, one service ace, a pair of stuff blocks. Amyot, a 5-foot-10 power-hitter from Ottawa, posted eight kills, nine digs and assisted on two blocks.

McGill held a 37-31 edge in kills and a 49-27 difference in digs. Both sides had seven blocks.

But Laval was hot from the service line, where they had a 10-2 advantage, which ended up being the difference in the match. McGill’s defensive play also let them down with eight service errors and 10 miscues on service reception.

McGill dropped into a tie for second-place with the Montreal Carabins. Bot teams are 5-2 in the topsy-turvy Quebec conference. The Martlets will hope to gain ground on Sunday when they host Sherbrooke (4-2) at 1 pm in Love Competition Hall, while Laval plays at Montreal.
