For the second consecutive evening, the University of the Fraser Valley men’s basketball team was at its best in the fourth quarter against the UBC Okanagan Heat.

Leading 61-57 at the end of the third, the Cascades opened the final frame on a 15-6 run to drain the suspense from the proceedings and clinch a weekend sweep on the road in Kelowna. The final score was 81-73.

UFV was coming off an 84-76 victory over the Heat on Friday.

“Down the stretch, we were just able to make a few more shots and take advantage of our opportunities,” Cascades head coach Adam Friesen said. “But we understand we have to play a lot better in the coming weekends if we’re to continue having success.”

Fifth-year centre Jasper Moedt scored seven of his team-high 19 points in the fourth quarter, and Dominique Brown and Kevon Parchment contributed 15 points apiece for the Cascades (2-0).

The Heat (0-2) were led by David Manshreck, who counted five three-pointers among his game-high 24 points and added 11 rebounds.

Manny Dulay (12 points, 2-for-3 from beyond the arc) also scored in double figures for the Cascades, while Nate Brown notched eight points and 10 rebounds.

The Heat won the rebounding battle by a 42-35 margin, but UFV had success attacking the basket on offence, getting to the free throw line with regularity. They went 25-for-35 from the charity stripe, and Moedt was 9-of-12.

“We just went to our strength and kind of played through the post,” Friesen said, analyzing his team’s success in the final frame. “Defensively, we were able to find a way to get consecutive stops in the fourth quarter, which we had trouble doing the first night.”

The UFV basketball teams host their home openers this coming week – the UNBC Timberwolves are the guests on Friday (women 6 p.m., men 8 p.m.) and Saturday (women 5 p.m., men 7 p.m.) at the Envision Athletic Centre.
