(ISN) – The Portland Winterhawks dropped a 5-4 decision to the Red Deer Rebels Friday at the Moda Center.
The Hawks opened the scoring six minutes into the game when Alex Schoenborn fed a puck towards the middle, where it caromed off a Red Deer defenseman past netminder Rylan Toth to give Portland a 1-0 lead. The Rebels tied it at the 9:13 mark on a goal by Conner Bleackley to make it 1-1.
Portland went back up at the 12:58 mark on a 3-on-2 when Ethan Price carried the puck into the Red Deer zone and fed Miles Koules, who fired a shot from the left faceoff circle past Toth for a 2-1 lead. The Rebels tied it again at the 16:31 mark on a goal by Austin Strand to make it a 2-2 game heading into the second.
The Rebels took a 3-2 lead at the 5:07 mark of the second on a goal from Evan Polei, then made it 4-2 at the 13:51 mark on a goal by Wyatt Johnson. The Hawks pulled within one at the 15:36 mark during 4-on-4 play when Dominic Turgeon scored during a scrum in front of the Rebels’ net. Then just 1:15 later, Chase De Leo pounced on a loose puck in the crease and fired it in to tie the game at 4-4 heading into the third.
It remained tied until 10.8 seconds remained, when Red Deer’s Johnson scored his second of the night to give the Rebels a 5-4 win.
The Hawks (7-11-0-2) are back in action tomorrow when they host the Kamloops Blazers at 7 p.m. at the Moda Center.
