Vancouver, BC – The trustees of the UBC Men’s Basketball Scholarship Endowment honoured head coach Kevin Hanson prior to Saturday night’s game versus Victoria for becoming the all-time winningest coach in UBC men’s basketball history.
On October 26, 2014 head coach Kevin Hanson led the Thunderbirds to a 77-69 victory over the University of Guelph Gyphons. With that win, Coach Hanson surpassed the previous record holder of 32 years, the late Dr. Peter Mullins, to become UBC Men’s Basketball all time overall win leader with 338 wins.
In recognition of this remarkable coaching milestone, the trustees donated $10,000 to the Marlowe Hanson Memorial Men’s Basketball Award.
David McLean, David Nelson, and Ken Woods, the trustees of the UBC Men’s Basketball Scholarship Endowment, along with UBC President Arvind Gupta recognized Hanson Saturday night for his outstanding coaching milestone.
“Our program is fortunate to have extraordinary supporters that continue to contribute in many ways,” said Hanson. “The contribution that was made to my father’s scholarship is a generous gift and one that I appreciate and will never forget. David McLean, David Nelson, and Ken Woods as Trustees for the Men’s Basketball Scholarship Foundation, care first and foremost about the student-athletes and because of this the men’s basketball program will continue to flourish for years to come.”
The Marlowe Hanson Memorial Award is named in honour of Hanson’s late father who was always a fixture at UBC home games sitting behind the team bench and first on the floor to congratulate the players and his son following a great game. The endowment provides awards to deserving members of the men’s varsity basketball team.
“On behalf of the UBC men’s basketball program, a heartfelt thank you to our donors, alumni, friends of the program and President Gupta who were in attendance on Saturday night,” said Hanson.
