CIS Men’s Hockey Top 10 (#7): Big shake-up behind top-ranked Bears

OTTAWA (CIS) – The reigning University Cup champion Alberta Golden Bears top the CIS men’s hockey rankings for the seventh time in as many national polls this season.

The Bears (11-1) received all but one of the 15 first-place votes from the media panel this week, with the other nod going to the only remaining undefeated team in the country, the defending OUA champion Windsor Lancers (11-0), who move up one position to a season-high No. 3 in the new poll.

Rounding out this week’s Top 10 are the No. 2 UNB Varsity Reds (8-1-1 / up one), No. 4 Saint Mary’s Huskies (8-1-1 / up three), No. 5 UQTR Patriotes (9-1 / up one), No. 6 Calgary Dinos (9-3 / down one), No. 7 Acadia Axemen (7-3 / down five), No. 8 Carleton Ravens (8-2 / up one), No. 9 Mount Royal Cougars (7-5 / down one) and No. 10 Moncton Aigles Bleus (6-3-1 / no change).

The top-ranked Golden Bears extended their winning streak to 10 games over the weekend with a pair of road victories over Manitoba but got all they could handle from the Bisons in both contests, erasing a third-period deficit on Friday to prevail 3-2 and winning 4-2 the following night, including an empty net goal.

Meanwhile in the OUA, Windsor also survived a couple of scares on the road to extend its current win streak. The Lancers edged Ryerson 3-2 in double overtime on Friday, before scoring four times in the third period on Saturday to beat Toronto 6-5.

Alberta and Windsor hope to continue to roll this weekend against UBC (two games) and McGill, respectively.

The biggest losers in the new poll, the Acadia Axemen drop five spots following an 0-2 home stand that included a 3-2 loss to Saint Mary’s and a 2-0 defeat at the hands of StFX.

Four Top-10 matchups are on the schedule this weekend, all in the AUS, including Saint Mary’s at UNB and Acadia at Moncton on Friday, followed by Acadia at UNB and Saint Mary’s at Moncton on Saturday. All games are set for 7 p.m. AST, live on


Voting is based on a 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis, with a 1st place vote worth 10 points. The CIS Men’s Ice Hockey Top Ten Committee is made up of media members from across Canada.
