(ISN) – Huskies women’s basketball fans already know the incredible job head coach Lisa Thomaidis has done in making the University of Saskatchewan one of the country’s top programs. Now anyone attending this year’s Raise a Paw Brunch on November 23 can learn more about how she is continuing to build the Canadian Olympic team into an international contender. Lisa will be this year’s guest speaker, not to speak about the Huskies, but to inform all about the four year process of building and preparing Canada’s National Team for the Olympic journey. Administrators, coaches and fans of any sport will enjoy and learn from this outstanding national coach.
Thomaidis joined the national program as an assistant coach back in 2001 remaining in that role until being named head coach in 2013. In 2012 the national team experienced its best showing at the London Olympics reaching the quarter-finals losing to the U.S.A. the eventual gold medal winners.
Last year at the FIBA Americas Championship for women she coached the team to a silver medal its best showing since 1995. That qualified the team for the 2014 FIBA World Championship for Women where they placed fifth last month.
With the Canada West season now underway the focus is on defending the Canada West title the team won last year, the third since Thomaidis became head coach 15 years ago. The Huskies have also been to the CIS championships 6 of the last 7 seasons. The team’s success is in part due to events like Raise a Paw Brunch which raises scholarship money to help bring the best student/athletes to the University of Saskatchewan.
This year offers a special deal for anyone buying a ticket to the brunch. The Victoria Vikes will be here November 21/22 and there will be a FREE game ticket for anyone coming to Raise A Paw for the Saturday November 22nd game which begins at 6:15 p.m. at the PAC.
