The championship was by invitation only and consisted of two days of preliminary rounds with all finals taking flight Sunday, November 9. Five UBC crews advanced to their respecitve A finals.
Wild storms that were feared on finals day never materialized; however, the wind did increase as the athletes took to the water on Sunday morning.
Senior T-Birds rower Katherine Enns raced in the women’s single boat class and commented on the intense nature of the competition.
“It’s exciting to see where you stand against the fastest people in Canada,” she said. “Racing like that, against the best, forces you to race outside of yourself. It becomes a game of who can I scare for the longest period of time before my body fails me. Sometimes it’s surprising what you can accomplish that way.”
A number of Olympians competed this weekend, including six silver medalists from the 2012 London Games and a bronze medalist from the 2008 Beijing Games. This regatta is just one of the many steps for athletes on their route to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, which is less than two years away.
