Vikes swim team compete in local Island Cup Invitational

By Elizabeth Chan,

(ISN) – VICTORIA, B.C. – University of Victoria Vikes swimmers competed in the local Island Pacific Cup Invitational at the Commonwealth Pool on Nov. 8-9.

The Vikes worked on further improving as they concluded a series of three weekends of consecutive racing in the final preparations towards Canada West Championships in two week’s time.

Many of the rookies partook in the ‘Rookie Challenge,’ a yearly competition requiring first-years to swim every event of a meet early in the season.

“It was a very gruelling challenge that many of the swimmers did well this year, with the best times spread across the board regardless of the schedule,” said Ryan Clouston, Vikes swimming assistant coach.

Ryan Howe completed the most swims overall with 29, including prelims, finals and relays. Brett Zollen, Sarah Galbraith and Peter Brothers were the newest to meet CIS-qualifying standards this weekend, while Sarah Galbraith set the new Vikes record at 32.87 for the 50-m breaststroke.

Up next the Vikes will prepare for the Canada West Swimming Championships hosted by Lethbridge on Nov. 21-23. Following the Christmas Break the Vikes will host the 2015 CIS National Championship, Feb 19-22, at Commonwealth Pool in Victoria.
